The Big College Move, Simplified.

It's almost that time for your kids to move into a college dorm for the very first time, or returning for another long school year. It's easy to overthink the packing list, and even easier to OVERPACK! Lucky for you, we've nailed this process down to a science, and are confident we can guide you through this quick transition with ease.

#1 - Sort out ALL of your belongings.

Before you start packing, organize all your belongings and separate the items you want to leave home. Remember that college dorm rooms are usually cramped, so only pack essentials. If you find anything that is worth selling or donating, make designated piles, and get working! Local organizations like the Salvation Army, Goodwill, or Habitat for Humanity are always in need of clothes, furniture, etc.

#2 - Map out the dorm.

Although this seems like an impossible task, your school should allow you to see some form of layout of where you'll be staying. If not, factor in the minimum necessities: a bed, desk, dresser, mini fridge/food area, and space for your roommate(s). This will allow you to really narrow down your packing list, and measure any furniture you plan on bringing.

#3 - The Dreaded packing list.

There are literally HUNDREDS of lists out there with what you should and shouldn't bring. Let's face it - your child is not going to use a top-of-the-line vacuum and mop. We've narrowed down the best FREE resources:

- This list from UPack
- Bed Bath and Beyond is always the OG supplier for college bedding
- Collegeboard is every student's resource for finding the right college, and their list is the most practical in our opinion: find it here.

#4 - Resist shopping right away, trust us.

Of course the first thing you’ll want to do is to hit the stores and stock up on necessities before you move into your dorm or apartment, but it’s best to wait. Often, you’ll end up buying things you won’t need. Hold off and make the shopping trip with roommates so you can split costs and get a better grasp of which items are actually needed.

#5 - Definitely decorate, but do it last.

While hanging posters, pictures and other decorations might the first thing you want to do once you’re moved in, start bigger and work your way down to the small items. Things like beds, couches and television stands should all be in place before the fun stuff goes on shelves or walls. Having the big items correctly placed allows for a proper flow and will help make your new small space feel like home in no time. to edit.

#6 - Have a PLAN, and a backup plan!

No matter what you plan on doing, do NOT 'wing it.' Have all of your boxes labeled and plan which ones you'll be unpacking first. You'll also want to have your floor layout handy, as well as jobs for everyone helping out. Believe us - you can never be more prepared!

Don't be afraid to ask for help, the GTC team has years of experience with moving, and we are THE best pair of hands you'll have for this day, and every day!
